Johnson City
Located west of Austin between Blanco and Marble Falls is the historic town of Johnson City. Best known as the birthplace and home of the 36th President of the United States, Lyndon Baines Johnson, Johnson City is located in an area of large ranches with stunning vistas. The town square features the lovely Blanco County Courthouse surrounded by quaint buildings, including the old limestone jail built in 1894 which is still in use. At Christmas the lighted Courthouse and its surroundings are truly a holiday treat. Many shops, bed and breakfasts and delightful restaurants are available. Families love Johnson City’s friendly, rural, small town atmosphere and excellent school system, along with the many exciting attractions in the area.
Attractions
Located in Johnson City is the Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park which includes the LBJ Boyhood Home, Museum, Johnson Settlement and the restored Withers & Spauldings General Merchants store. A few miles west of town in Stonewall are the LBJ State Park and Historical Site. Of special interest is the Sauer-Beckmann Farmstead, the working LBJ Ranch, the Johnson family cemetery and The Texas White House which is being restored to replicate its use during the Presidential years.
Many other interesting attractions offer opportunities year round. The 5,500 acre Bamberger Ranch Preserve includes the Environmental Educational Institute, preservation programs, lodging, tours, meeting facilities and more. Also within a short distance is the 2,500 acre Benson Farm and Ranch offering guided hunts for whitetail and exotics as well as fishing and full lodging. The Exotic Resort Zoo located just north of Johnson City on 137 wooded acres with over 500 animals and 80 species offers guided tours, luxury safari style cabin rental and more. Within a short drive of Johnson City are Pedernales Falls State Park and the 2,427 acre Reimer’s Ranch Preserve which offers world class rock climbing, 3 miles of Pedernales River frontage famous for white bass fishing, and 18 miles of Hill Country trails. Nearby, the lovely 31 acre Westcave Preserve is an ecological gem. Other attractions include vineyards and lavender farms, and the outstanding Benini Outdoor Sculpture Ranch located just west of Johnson City. Parks include Johnson City Park with pool and the soon-to-open LCRA Park on over 200 acres just north of the City limits with Pedernales River frontage and an Olympic size swimming pool. Nearby Fredericksburg with its German architecture and food features the Admiral Nimitz Museum State Historic Site and the National Museum of the Pacific War.
